Who Needs an Italy Work Visa?
Non-EU Citizens: All citizens from countries outside the European Union, European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland require a work visa to legally work in Italy. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens can work freely without special permits.
Types of Italy Work Visas
1. Subordinate Work Visa (Lavoro Subordinato)
The most common type for employees with a job offer from an Italian employer. Requires a “Nulla Osta” (entry clearance) obtained by your employer through the Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione.
2. Self-Employment Visa
For businessmen investing in Italy, freelancers, high-level managers, artists, and performers. Categories include general managers, university professors, language lecturers, interpreters, and translators.
3. EU Blue Card
For highly qualified workers with university degrees and job offers for skilled positions. Requires at least three years of university education and professional qualifications validated by Italian authorities.
4. Digital Nomad/Remote Worker Visa
For highly specialized individuals working remotely while living in Italy. Available for freelancers, consultants, and employees who can work completely remotely. Requires post-secondary degrees or at least three years’ professional experience.
Application Process
Step 1: Employer Obtains Work Permit
Your Italian employer must first apply for a work permit (Nulla Osta) at the immigration office in their respective Italian province. This is required before you can apply for the visa.
Step 2: Visa Application
After receiving the work permit, you can apply for the Italy Work Visa at the Italian embassy or consulate in your home country. Applications must be submitted in person.
Step 3: Enter Italy and Apply for Residence Permit
Within 8 days of entering Italy, you must apply for a residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) at a local post office.

- Passport with minimum 2 blank pages, valid for at least 3 months beyond visa duration

Italy operates on a quota system with set limits on work visas issued annually. As of 2023, the quota increased from 69,700 to 82,705 for non-EU and non-EEA nationals. Highly skilled employees may be exempt from quotas.
Visa Validity and Renewal
Italy work visas can be valid for up to 2 years depending on the employment contract and can be renewed for up to 5 years.
